How Much Did Sheryl Crow Know About Lance Armstrong?

Amidst all the hoopla of the Lance Armstrong confession, some attention is now being directed towards the lady who almost married him,nine-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow. I love Sheryl Crow and detest LanceArmstrong – it’s hard to have sympathy for seemingly soulless sociopath who established acharity as a vanity project cum force-field against anyone who questioned him –but nevertheless, I’m intrigued as to how much Crow knew.
The rumours at the time of their breakup were that theydiffered politically and the subsequent tension was becoming insurmountable. With Crow being a passionate Democrat who both publicly criticised the Bushadministration (in spoken word and in song) and campaigned for Obama, thesuggestion was that conversely Armstrong was very much a Republican.
Being that we now have confirmation from the man himselfthat he was cheat, not to mention word leaking out that Crow has allegedly (andin private) revealed to authorities details of her former fiancée’s dopingprogram, did that play a part in their breakup? To be blunt, did Crow come to realiseArmstrong was not the man she wanted to marry when she learned the full extentof his narcissism?
For a woman who most famously sang that all she wanted to dowas “have some fun,” her albums are also full of surprisingly erudite politicaland social commentary. I say surprisingly, but I have known this for 20 years. However, the distance between the Sheryl Crow of radio play and of album tracks wasnever more emblematic than on her fourth album C’mon C’mon, led by the (on the surface) lightweight hit Soak Up The Sun - a catchy ditty that belied the integrity, beauty and careful craftsmanship of tracks like It’s Only Love, Diamond Roadand Weather Channel. This dichotomy has existed throughout her career.
In this Sheryl Crow fan’s mind, her finest two studio albumsare #1 (Tuesday Night Music Club) and #6 (Detours). With album #1 having soldmany millions around the world, I’d like to highlight a stunner from the lesser-bought #6 whichto me sums up the intelligence and passion of Sheryl Crow. A fine songwriter andmulti-instrumentalist who actually gives a damn about the state of the world welive in, here is Shine Over Babylon from 2009’s Detours.
