Like a Bird lyrics by Johnny Cash
Like a Bird was written by none other than Leonard Cohen for his 1969 album, Songs from a Room. Cash's version found his way onto the American Recordings album which is amusing as Cohen is Canadian*.
Lyrics
Like a bird on a wireLike a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be freeLike a fish on a hookLike a knight from an old fashioned bookI have saved all my ribbons with thee
And if I have been unkindI hope that you will just let it go byAnd if I have been untrueI hope you know it was never to you
Like a baby stillborn Like a beast with his horn I have torn everyone who reached out for me
But I swear by this songBy all I have done wrongI'll make it all up to you
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutchHe called out to me " Don't ask for so much " And a young man leaning on his darkened doorHe cried out to me " Hey, why not ask for more "
Like a bird on a wireLike a drunk in a midnight choirI have tried in my way to be free
Check out the lyrics to Tennessee Stud by Cash, also from American Recordings.
*The album was actually named for Rick Rubin's label, American Recordings which used to be known as Def Jam record.
